Biking/Inline Skating

Hike, bike, ride or glide the Heartland Trail during your stay at Resort Content. We are close enough to the trail to say, “It is almost in our back yard”.  Situated midway between Park Rapids and Walker we are a centrally located headquarters for all your biking adventures. The Paul Bunyan Trail is now linked to the Heartland Trail and there is talk of expanding the Heartland Trail to Detroit Lakes. There are also bike paths along the roadway to Itasca State Park and bike trails within the park. Biking is a very popular activity. There are two clubs that ride regularly. One of the local bike clubs rides together two evenings a week during the summer months. Visitors or newcomers are always welcome. We suggest you contact Ken Grob 732- 0364 for more information.

The Minnesota Trails Magazine web site www.mntrails.com is the official site for information on the Heartland Trail. For additional trail information you may wish to visit the Park Rapids Lakes Area web site www.parkrapids.com/biking.htm. See the section on Recreational Equipment if may need to rent bikes.  We are also working at putting together information on Mountain Biking Trails in our area.

Birding

Our area offers plenty of opportunities to spot migratory and resident bird species.  In recent years, bird watching has grown in popularity.  It is an adventure that can be enjoyed in the out of doors by young and old alike.  You will also learn to identify and appreciate many of the wildflowers, trees, and other forms of vegetation native to this part of Minnesota.  The magnificent forests and lakes are home to a variety of wildlife.  Literature to assist individuals new to the sport is available at Resort Content.  Bring your camera so you can recapture the excitement of the moment as you experience the wonders of nature. Enjoy the information on our chamber site www.parkrapids.com/stories.htm. about our state bird, the common loon.

Resources:  General Information

Throughout Minnesota there are 4 established trails for bird watchers to practice their craft.  Located near Detroit Lakes, the Pine to Prairie Trail was the first international birding trail of its kind.  The other 3 trails are the Minnesota River Valley, Great River, and North Shore

The following information was obtained from the Detroit Lakes Chamber of Commerce tourist guide.  Detroit Lakes is located in a unique transition zone where prairie meets hardwood and conifer forests.  This collection of habitats provides homes for more than 275 species of birds.  Birders from across the country come to the Detroit Lakes Festival of Birds each May to see “life birds” and continue along Minnesota’s first birding trail.  Established as the Pine to Prairie Birding Trail in 1998, the route starts south of Detroit Lakes on Highway 59 and continues north for a total of 200 miles and 45 viewing sites.  In 2009, the trail was extended north to Winnipeg, Canada for a total of 75 sites along the 500-mile Pine to Prairie International Birding Trail.  Pick up a free brochure at the Detroit Lake Chamber of Commerce offices or log onto www.mnbirdtrail.com.  Catch the latest bird sightings on the birding hotline, 1-800-433-1888.

Boating

Boating can be great fun!  Everyone enjoys getting out on the lake on a hot summer day.  Do you wish to fish or are you more interested in water skiing or tubing.  Maybe a sightseeing trip around the lake on a pontoon is more to your liking.  If you do not own your own equipment, do not be discouraged.  There are several places to rent boats and other watercraft.  It is also possible to take an excursion boat ride or enjoy a dinner cruise.  You can even rent houseboats and taking sailing lessons on Leech Lake.

Safety is a major concern.  Ask us for a copy of the rules for operating watercraft on Minnesota lakes and rivers or obtain a copy where you purchase your fishing license.  Lake maps are sold in most bait shops.  We have large maps and aerial photos of Lake Belle Taine in our cabins.  It is a good idea to consult a lake map and become familiar with the structure of the lake on which you will be boating before heading out for a day of fun.  We also have maps that identify lakes in Hubbard County and pinpoint the public access.  At Resort Content we are adamant about protecting the water quality of the lakes in our area.  Please do your part to, “Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers”.

See the section labeled Recreational Equipment for rental information.  You may also want to refer to the sections on Canoeing, Fishing, Sailing, Tubing, and Waterskiing.  The Entertainment section of this web site has information on excursion boat trips and dinner cruises.
