Rainy Day Fun
A rainy day need not spoil you vacations plans. As a child, I
have fond memories of rainy days because my mother made them “special”. In
her closet high up on a shelf I could not reach was a box entitled Rainy
Day Fun. It was always such an adventure to learn what
new items had been added to the box. It contained books to read,
art projects, and games to play. As I reflect, I remember the sounds
the rain made hitting against the house and the clean fresh smell so
intense after the rain subsided. I loved the stories she told to
quiet my fears of the thunder and lightning. I remember looking
for the rainbow in the sky. I can almost smell and taste the cookies
she often baked on rainy days. But most of all, I remember spending
time with my mother. Here are a few suggestions to help make your
rainy day special.
- Trace your genealogy. Are you interested in knowing more about
your ancestors? A rainy day provides an excellent opportunity
to visit the library and do some research. On vacation you may
discover you have the time to engage in activities a busy schedule
never allows.
- Games are always a lot of fun! But on a rainy day you can have
a blast playing board games such as Monopoly or Scrabble or playing
cards. If you did not bring your favorites, check in the
office. We have a large variety of board games. You may
find other resort guests who are anxious to play cards. Jinx
and Craig like to play a game called “Dirty Canasta” or “Hand and Foot”. For
those who want something less sedentary we intend to purchase a Wii
and make an assortment of games available to our guests. Foosball
and darts are other possibilities.
- Become a bookworm. Time passes quickly when one is lost in
a good book. If you do not have any reading material with you,
Jinx is an avid reader and may have a mystery that will keep you glued
to the pages of the book. Another option is to visit area bookstores
on a rainy day. We suggest visiting Beagle Books or Book World
in Park Rapids and Sister Wolf Books in Dorset. There is also
a used book store in Walker. Don’t forget to stop for refreshments
at a local coffee shop or soda fountain before returning to the resort.
- Stimulate those brain cells. Put your mind to work solving
a sudoku or working a crossword puzzle. Join others guests and
help to put together a jigsaw puzzle. Find a magazine counter
and purchase a couple of books with brain-teasers or quizzes to give
your mind a good workout.
- Go bargain hunting or souvenir shopping. Scour resale shops,
thrift stores, antique dealers, or indoor flea markets to see what
kind of odd or unusual things you can find. You don’t even need
to buy anything to have fun. Check out the gift or souvenir shops. We
have many in this area.
- Go bowling! Bowling is an indoor activity and a good rainy
day choice because it can entertain the entire family. It provides
the opportunity to talk with one another and have a little competitive
fun. You can pretend to be serious bowlers or request bumper
lanes if you’re a little rusty.
- Create an olfactory sensation. Bake cookies! Allow a
big pot of soup to simmer most of the day. Have each member of the
family prepare one food item for a meal. Experiment
with new recipes. Put out a few candles and add some music playing
in the background and you have just turned an ordinary meal into a culinary
delight.
- Get crafty! Crafts are always a great way to stay entertained
on a rainy day. For the kids, we have an assortment of crayons,
markers, paper, scissors, and glue. Jinx enjoys crafts so we
even have some ideas and kits made up for you. Ladies you may
want to slip into town to Monica’s (quilt fabrics/yarn shop) for supplies
to start a new project. The Ben Franklin in Park Rapids also
is an excellent source of craft supplies.
- Take a walk back in time! Visit the museums and historical
spots in the area and learn a bit about Minnesota history. Jinx
is currently working on an itinerary for you and a quiz to test your
knowledge at the end of the day.
- Visit art galleries and
art studios in the area. We have many
very talented residents. A local group is currently working on
a listing with a map and directions to the various the artists. A
rainy day provides not only the perfect opportunity to visit local
artists, but also the possibility of taking a class.
- Organize your pictures. Use a rainy day to find someplace to
print your pictures. Journal about your vacation. Try putting
together an online book. Connect with family and friends back
home by e-mailing them pictures or mailing them a postcard.
- Go to a
play or other live performance. Go to the cinema. Check
out the entertainment section of our web site. A rainy day provides
the perfect opportunity to attend a movie or enjoy live entertainment. The
local newspaper is a good source of information about what is currently
happening.
- Try a new sport or activity! Have you ever played pool? Do
you wonder what intrigues the young people in an arcade?
- Pamper
yourself. Have you ever been to a spa? This is
a great time to have a facial or get a manicure and pedicure. A
massage would be great. We have a variety of salons in the area
that have extra personnel in the summer months so they can handle a
walk-in clientele.
